Six iconic harbour parks and reserves, from Balls Head to Yurulbin Park, have been officially recognised for their rich Aboriginal and european heritage. This listing protects the cultural landscapes that form the natural spirit of Sydney Harbour — a place where history has flowed for thousands of years.
Six inner harbour reserves and parks across the Sydney Harbour have been included in the NSW State Heritage Register. These sites together form the ‘green necklace’, a series of cultural landscapes around the headlands and water planes connecting the northern and southern shores.
The Green Necklace includes: Badangi Reserve (surrounding Berrys Island Reserve and Wollstonecraft Foreshore Reserve), Ballast Point Park, Balls Head Reserve, Berrys Bay (Carradah Park), and Yurulbin Park and Foreshore.
The decision comes after the need for representation and preservation of the cultural landscape of Sydney Harbour and its natural heritage was realized. The State Heritage Register includes many built heritage sites along the Sydney Harbour, but not the water landscapes that constitute the spirit of the Harbour.
These cultural landscapes have a long history of occupation dating back thousands of years. The region represents the culture and heritage of the Gadigal Peoples and later the europeans.
This step ensures the protection of the heritage of the Harbour that has witnessed the history of the country for ages.
